Del Mar participates in earthquake preparedness exercise

Members of Del Mar's executive team joined their counterparts from nearly two dozen neighboring jurisdictions July 24 in San Marcos to drill on earthquake preparedness and response.

The North County Emergency Managers Earthquake Tabletop Exercise focused on Emergency Operations Center roles of policy, public works, utilities and wastewater, public information, emergency responders and emergency managers.

The event was designed to strengthen readiness, improve interagency communication and plan for a coordinated response in the event of a disaster.

City responds to tsunami advisory

A tsunami advisory made for a late night for some City employees on Tuesday, but a brief rise in sea levels after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia caused no injuries, evacuations or damage in Del Mar.

Soon after the record-setting earthquake was reported, Del Mar officials and those of neighboring coastal agencies initiated hourly coordination meetings with the County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services.

The meetings included officials from the National Tsunami Warning Center and State of California Office of Emergency Services.

By late Tuesday evening, lifeguards had staged vehicles and boats on high ground and, at the beach, placed barricades across the street-ends and moved waste receptacles to the back side of seawalls.

Elsewhere, Sheriff's deputies stood by after receiving maps and briefings on evacuation routes.

While the response served as valuable real-world training, thankfully the preparations were for naught.

In Del Mar, the advisory expired at 5:29 a.m. Wednesday.

How residents can prepare for disaster

As City employees drilled on earthquake preparedness and responded to a tsunami advisory, residents are encouraged to prepare for disaster by taking advantage of rich resources presented on Del Mar's "Emergency Preparedness" and the County of San Diego's "Alert San Diego" webpages.

Biking in Del Mar? Webpage lays out rules and regs

A new page on the City's website lays out rules for the safe and considerate riding of bikes and e-bikes.

The page also links to videos, schedules for safety classes and relevant sections of the Del Mar Municipal Code and California Vehicle Code.

On public streets, cyclists are subject to the same rules as motorists. Riders who don't follow the rules may be subject to ticketing. In Del Mar, the Municipal Code allows first-time violators to take a bicycle safety course in lieu of a citation or fine.

SDG&E explains upcoming "base service charge"

In materials issued to the City of Del Mar this week, SDG&E says it is preparing to introduce a "Base Service Charge" on residential power bills.

Starting in October, most customers will pay $24 per month for the charge, which is designed to cover the utility's investments in equipment like transformers and meters and cost of providing customer service.

On its website, SDG&E says: "Itโ€™s not an additional charge on your bill โ€” these costs were previously included in the price kilowatt-hour (kWh) for electric delivery. Now they will be broken out on their own line on the bill. Because this is a reallocation of costs, SDG&E will not earn more profit from this change."
