Tonight: Full closure of SB I-5 begins near La Jolla

Heads up, commuters: Caltrans has scheduled a full closure of southbound Interstate 5 near La Jolla and Pacific Beach from 10 p.m. tonight through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8.


The closure of all southbound lanes between Highway 52 and Mission Bay Drive is to allow for roadway and drainage improvements, according to a news release. 


The closure will be the first of six planned for the area as part of the transportation agency's I-5 Asset Management Project.

A regular meeting of the City Council begins at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino Del Mar.

Monday: Via de la Valle paving begins

Late night paving of Via de la Valle between Jimmy Durante Boulevard and San Andres Drive is scheduled for 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sept. 8-9 with daytime work planned for pedestrian and traffic signal improvements. Painting of road striping is scheduled for the evenings of Sept. 10-11.


Closures of freeway ramps are scheduled as follows:

  • Sept. 8: Northbound and southbound on ramps from westbound Via de la Valle; and
  • Sept. 9: Southbound on ramp from eastbound Via de la Valle. 

The City of San Diego controls this segment of the busy road. The planned resurfacing includes 1.83 "lane miles."


In an Aug. 28 presentation, San Diego officials outlined the $4.3 million project to the Carmel Valley Community Planning Board.

Monday: Geotechnical testing to begin

Geotechnical studies related to the proposed Rail Realignment Project are set to begin Sept. 8 along the railway near Jimmy Durante Boulevard and on Recuerdo Drive in Del Mar Heights.

Sept. 13: Recycling event at Shores Park 

The City of Del Mar and EDCO are sponsoring a free recycling, shredding and mulch event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at the lower parking lot of Shores Park. Enter off of Stratford Court south of Ninth Street.


Residents can responsibly dispose of electronic waste, fluorescent bulbs, household batteries and sharps.


Household hazardous waste and pharmaceuticals will not be accepted.


A certified paper shredder will provide onsite shredding of up to three banker boxes full of documents per household.


Residents also can self-load up to three barrels of mulch and compost while supplies last. The event is open to City of Del Mar residents and businesses only. The collection of sharps is limited to residents only.

Sept. 14: Community Picnic at Powerhouse Park 

The Del Mar Foundation's annual community picnic is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 at Powerhouse Park. Food, games and music by the band Prairie Sky will delight guests of all ages. No registration is required.

Friends of the Del Mar Library seek board members 

The Friends of the Del Mar Library are seeking volunteers to serve on the group's Board of Directors.


The nonprofit Friends guide and support the library on the purchasing of materials and programming of concerts, lectures, story times and craft workshops.


Board members' time commitment is minimal.


New board members will join their colleagues in planning a full program of activities for 2026, the 30th anniversary of the branch at its location on Camino del Mar at 13th Street.
