Round-the-clock railway work is scheduled for this weekend

Round-the-clock construction is scheduled this weekend as SANDAG proceeds with its Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization Program.

From 10 p.m. tonight through 5 a.m. Monday, all train service between Oceanside and downtown San Diego will be suspended to allow for nonstop construction near Sea Grove Park, 12th Street, between 6th and 8th streets and south of 4th Street.

Residents could hear noise from construction equipment and see bright lights illuminating work areas. Bluff trails may be closed and parking will be limited on lower 8th Street and along Coast Boulevard.

The Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization 5 project is expected to continue through mid-2027.

Party planning underway as library turns 30

The Del Mar Library turns 30 this year and festivities are planned for October, Branch Manager Polly Cipparrone told the City Council this week.

As organizers work on special programs, library lovers can mark their calendars for a celebration at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 10, Cipparrone said.

While the Del Mar Library has existed as a branch of the San Diego County Library for 111 years, it did not have a permanent home until 1996, when the City of Del Mar acquired the craftsman structure on Camino Del Mar at 13th Street.

The building opened in 1914 as St. James Catholic Church.

Video captures early days of curbside recycling

Curbside recycling has come a long way since 1983, when a scrappy nonprofit, Solana Recyclers, began serving Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas.

A video from 1989, unearthed and posted this week by Del Mar TV, illustrates the early days of curbside recycling, the low tech processes and the sheer determination that made it happen.

In the 1990s, Solana Recyclers got out of the curbside recycling business and reinvented itself as the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation.

Residents can drop off Christmas trees through Jan. 14 at the Del Mar Public Works yard, 2240 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

Flocked trees, tinsel and inorganic decorations cannot be recycled.
