Welcome to the first Progress Report for the City of Del Mar’s Downtown Streetscape Project. We are excited to launch the long-awaited improvement program for Camino del Mar and we are determined to keep you informed.

When the six-month job begins in January, we will send regular updates to summarize recent construction activities and those expected for the week ahead. We will announce closures of lanes, parking or sidewalks. We will let you know what to expect and how to get questions answered.

A lot is going into Downtown Streetscape. In upcoming issues, we will talk about building materials, plants and trees, furnishings, equipment, sustainability features and what it takes to put them all together for a better, safer downtown Del Mar.

Downtown Streetscape: The Big Picture

The Downtown Streetscape Project will bring new paving, dedicated bike lanes, lane striping, street furniture, trees and landscaping to seven blocks of the city’s commercial center between 9^th and Plaza streets.  Construction is scheduled to run from January through June.

Along the frontages of storefronts, restaurants and offices, plans call for new sidewalks accented with rose-colored pavers. Crosswalks will be built of precast pavers in shades of gray. Corners of intersections will be planted and hardscaped with rounded “bulb-outs.”

The project will bring major updates of street lighting to Del Mar’s main thoroughfare. Bell-shaped streetlamps affixed to tapered wooden poles will provide a defining feature. The poles are equipped to hold flower baskets and banners.

Plans include new trees, benches, bike racks, bus shelters, waste receptacles and newspaper racks.

The contractor, San Diego-based Tri-Group Construction and Development, Inc., is set to begin the six-month project next month. Demolition, hardscape, then landscaping crews – in that order – will work from Plaza Street southward to 9th Street along the east side of Camino del Mar. Once finished, crews will return to Plaza Street and work from north to south on the west side of Camino del Mar. Construction then will move to the medians. Fresh blacktop and lane striping is scheduled for the end of the job.

The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.

Streetscape costs are expected to total $6.8 million and will be covered with a combination of funds from Measure Q ($3.9 million); the existing Streetscape budget ($1.4 million) and financing ($1.5 million).

Jan. 7: Biweekly briefing, public welcome

Residents and business owners are invited to attend biweekly briefings hosted by the project team. The standing meeting will cover upcoming construction activity and be held at the same time and location every two weeks. The first briefing is set for 9 a.m. Jan. 7 at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar. Please join us!
