In this issue: Concrete pouring begins

Sidewalks between 15th and 13th streets were the first to be poured for the Downtown Streetscape Project.

Forming and pouring

Between 15th and 13th streets this week, workers formed and poured the first of many segments of sidewalk for the Downtown Streetscape Project.

Also poured were the project's first new curb ramps, at 15th Street.

The sidewalks are made of 3/8-inch Carrol Canyon exposed aggregate natural gray concrete.

The concrete is scored into 3-foot squares.

Once cured, the concrete is sealed to protect against water and food stains.

Street lights at Civic Center

Also this week, workers installed the first of nearly 60 street lights planned for the Downtown Streetscape.

The pole shown here is 18 feet tall and includes hardware to mount a banner.

Other poles are 12 feet tall and equipped to hang either flower baskets or a banner.

Looking forward: Jan. 14 -18

For the week ahead, crews are scheduled to: finish the installation of sidewalks, curbs and curb ramps along the 1300 block; finish the 13th Street storm drain inlet; begin crosswalk construction on the east side of 13th Street; demolish and replace sidewalks, curbs and curb ramps along the 1200 block. Construction activities are subject to change.

Safety is no accident

In construction areas, one of two lanes and parallel parking will be closed during work hours. Sidewalks could be closed temporarily. Please read and follow all posted signs. Do not cross orange fencing and stay clear of closed sidewalks. Thank you!

Jan. 22: Biweekly briefing, public welcome

Residents and business owners are invited to attend biweekly briefings on upcoming construction activity. The next briefing is set for 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar. Please join us!

Businesses open during construction

Stores, restaurants and offices are open for business during construction. Watch for signs and temporary access points if workers are busy near the business you're visiting. If you need help gaining access to an an entrance, please ask a worker for help. We appreciate your patience during construction and apologize for any inconvenience.

Free parking at Civic Center

Visitors to downtown Del Mar can park for free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino Del Mar. The garage is accessible from entrances on 10^th and 11^th streets and by a stairway or elevator that connect to the plaza above.

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify and improve safety along the Camino del Mar corridor between 9th and Plaza streets. The $6.8 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through June. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.
