As the $6.8 million project presses into its sixth week, business owners and residents have come face to face with the noise, mess and inconvenience of construction.

The City of Del Mar is making every effort to mitigate those impacts with signage, up-to-date information delivery and accessible project managers.

Thank you for your patience during construction. We apologize for any inconvenience. In July – when Del Mar’s largest single street and sidewalk project is landscaped and furnished – we expect the community to receive great dividends.

Feb. 11 - 15: 14th Street intersection closure

The T intersection at 14th Street and Camino del Mar is scheduled to close from 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. next week to allow for the installation of a paver crosswalk. The closure will affect the immediate work zone only. Maiden Lane and access to a parking garage on the northeast corner of the intersection will remain open.

A detour route will direct vehicles to 15th and 13th Streets. At the close of each workday, crews will lay steel plates over the crosswalks to reopen the intersection.

More paver crosswalk installations, at 13th and 12th streets, are scheduled for the week of Feb. 18 through Feb. 22. During this period, through-access will not be provided after work hours because of narrow roads and safety concerns. Detour routes will send vehicles to 14th and 11th streets.

Also for next week, demolition and concrete work is scheduled to continue on the 1200 and 1100 blocks of Camino del Mar.

After a rainy start to the week, crews finished pouring sidewalks on the 1300 block (left) and continued demolition and drainage installation on the 1200 block (right).

Feb. 19: Biweekly briefing, public welcome

Residents and business owners are invited to meet the project team and get the latest information on construction activity during biweekly briefings at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar. The next briefing is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 19. Download a schedule (PDF).

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify Camino del Mar and improve safety between 9th and Plaza streets. The $6.8 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through June. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.

Free parking at Civic Center

Visitors to downtown Del Mar can park for free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino Del Mar. The garage is accessible from entrances on 10th and 11th streets and by a stairway or elevator that connect to the plaza above.

Safety is no accident

In construction areas, one of two lanes and parallel parking will be closed during work hours. Sidewalks could be closed temporarily. Please read and follow all posted signs. Do not cross orange fencing and stay clear of closed sidewalks. Thank you!
