Scheduling, challenges and "finished" work

As the Downtown Streetscape Project moves forward, the project team thanks residents and business owners for their continued patience when dealing with the inconvenience of heavy construction. How can we answer your questions and help solve problems? Please let us know.

A most-common question is when will construction be happening near your home or business. The latest construction schedules are posted in the upper right-hand corner of the Downtown Streetscape Project web page. The schedules are kept as up-to-date as possible.

From home improvement projects to multi-million dollar street improvements, any construction job presents challenges. Downtown Streetscape has coincided with one of the rainiest winters in recent history. Some pieces of the job can't get finished until utility workers remove a pole or relocate lines. Downtown Streetscape has faced its share of challenges, which unfortunately create delays and can cause crews to move elsewhere while an issue gets resolved.

For safety, some planting areas, footings and materials storage must be marked with orange cones and fencing -- making a segment that's mostly finished appear unfinished. That, too, is an unfortunate consequence of a complicated project that, when finished, will greatly beautify and improve pedestrian and vehicular safety in downtown Del Mar.

Another important reminder: Convenient parking is always free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino del Mar.

Next week: Work moves west of highway

For the week of March 25, crews are scheduled to move to the west side of Camino del Mar to begin demolishing sections of sidewalk between 14th and 15th streets. The work includes installing Silva Cells to capture stormwater and assist with tree growth. Activities are expected to cause minor pedestrian impacts and no traffic impacts.

Week of April 1: 15th Street construction

Construction of crosswalks and pedestrian ramps at 15th Street is set to begin April 1. First up is the demolition and reconstruction of the southwest ramp, then the southeast ramp, followed by the installation of paver crosswalks in all four directions.  Pedestrian impacts and traffic impacts are expected, with one traffic lane remaining open at all times.

Three busy blocks

Downtown Streetscape construction this week expanded to include three blocks between 9th and 12th streets. Crews kept busy with vegetation clearing, demolition, forming and pouring sidewalks and installing Silva Cells to capture stormwater and improve tree growth. More of the same is scheduled for the week of March 25, in addition to construction of a brick paver crosswalk on the east side of 9th Street.

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify Camino del Mar and improve safety between 9th and Plaza streets. The $6.8 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through June. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.

April 1: Biweekly briefing, public welcome

Residents and business owners are invited to meet the project team and get the latest information on construction activity during biweekly briefings at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar. The next briefing is set for 9 a.m. Monday, April 1. Download a schedule (PDF). 

Free parking at Civic Center

Visitors to downtown Del Mar can park for free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino Del Mar. The garage is accessible from entrances on 10th and 11th streets and by a stairway or elevator that connect to the plaza above.
