Week of April 8: Activity, lane closures
at multiple Locations

For the month of April, the Downtown Streetscape Project has crews working at multiple locations on both sides of Camino del Mar, and during the week ahead, trenching activity will require the closure of the bike lane and slow lane on northbound Camino del Mar. See below.

9th Street Crosswalk

Workers lay crosswalk pavers at the 9th Street intersection next to northbound Camino del Mar. During the week of April 8, the crosswalk construction will move to the west side of the highway. Westbound 9th Street at Camino del Mar will be closed to through traffic. The 9th Street closure applies only to the immediate work area. Detour routes and pedestrian access to all businesses will be provided.

The 1000 Block

Finished sidewalks and pedestrian ramps at 9th Street

Workers pour sidewalks on the east side of the 1000 block. The construction of curbing, gutters and a retaining wall near Canterbury Corner is expected to continue throughout April.

The 1100 Block

On the 1100 block, where construction is expected to continue throughout April, workers have opened temporary parking.

The 1200 Block - West Side of Camino del Mar

Crews install a Silva Cell system to aid tree growth and capture storm water on the 1200 block of west Camino del Mar. That block is scheduled for demolition to begin next week.

Next week: Lane closure for trenching

Starting next week, a subcontractor will begin digging a 2,000-foot-long trench for electrical conduit on the east side of Camino del Mar between Plaza and 12^th Streets. The trenching will require closure of the northbound slow lane and bike lane during work hours. The conduits will serve streetlights, convenience power outlets and irrigation controllers. An additional pair of 4-inch conduits will be installed for future communication lines.

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify Camino del Mar and improve safety between 9th and Plaza streets. The $6.8 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through June. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.

April 15: Biweekly briefing, public welcome

Residents and business owners are invited to meet the project team and get the latest information on construction activity during biweekly briefings at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar. The next briefing is set for 9 a.m. April 15. Download a schedule (PDF).

Free parking at Civic Center

Visitors to downtown Del Mar can park for free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino Del Mar. The garage is accessible from entrances on 10th and 11th streets and by a stairway or elevator that connect to the plaza above.

Safety is no accident

In construction areas, one of two lanes and parallel parking will be closed during work hours. Sidewalks could be closed temporarily. Please read and follow all posted signs. Do not cross orange fencing and stay clear of closed sidewalks. Thank you!

January through April: East side of Camino del Mar
April through June: West side of Camino del Mar
June: Camino del Mar medians and landscaping
June: Camino del Mar paving, striping and signage.
