Rain delays, infrastructure challenges and accommodating requests from business owners have placed the Downtown Streetscape Project about two months behind schedule. The challenges also have added nearly $425,000 to the six-month construction project, budgeted originally at $6.8 million.
A Project Update and Request for Funding (PDF) is scheduled for the City Council’s hearing 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar.
The long-awaited project to beautify and improve safety along six blocks of Camino del Mar has faced interruptions from 41 rain days, which require preparation and cleanup before and after.
Demolishing streets and sidewalks has revealed unknown or damaged utility lines, including corroded metal storm drains running beneath Camino del Mar at 10th and 11th streets. Replacing the damaged pipes is critical to the overall project and, at an estimated $300,000, comprises the majority of the request for additional funding.
More complications have come with the securing of easements. Inefficiencies and delays also have come as a result of accommodating requests from businesses.
To minimize additional delays and make up for lost time, the City Council is set to consider: adding construction crews; finishing work in areas susceptible to interruptions before Memorial Day; allowing construction on Saturdays; extending work hours to 7 p.m., and minimizing design changes
