In this issue: Sidewalk Closure at Stratford Square

Four-day sidewalk closure at 15th Street

As part of the Downtown Streetscape Project, the sidewalk on west Camino del Mar just south of 15^th Street is scheduled to be closed completely from April 29 through May 2. The closure is to demolish and replace curbs, gutters, sidewalks and planters between 15^th Street and the brick pedestrian alley just south of Stratford Square.

Access to all of the Stratford Square storefronts facing Camino del Mar will be unavailable; an alternate entrance will be open on 15^th Street.

Also during this period, at the 15^th Street intersection with Camino del Mar, the southern east-west crosswalk and western north-south crosswalks will be closed for demolition and replacement. Pedestrians will be directed to the 15^th Street crosswalk at Stratford Court. On southbound Camino del Mar, the outside traffic lane, bike lane and parallel parking at the work area will be unavailable. Lanes on 15^th Street will be subject to intermittent closure.

The closures are intended to complete a full scope of work within a reduced amount of time. Completed portions of the work area will reopen as quickly as possible.

Construction Activity: Week of April 22

EAST SIDE OF CAMINO DEL MAR

By the end of the work week, all sidewalks on the east side of Camino del Mar are expected to be reopened completely. On the 1000 and 1100 blocks, pedestrian ramps that have required the construction of retaining walls opened this week. Also on those blocks, asphalt paving scheduled for today is expected to restore all public parking spaces.

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify Camino del Mar and improve safety between 9th and Plaza streets. The $7.2 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through June. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.

April 29: Biweekly briefing, public welcome

Residents and business owners are invited to meet the project team and get the latest information on construction activity during biweekly briefings at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar. The next briefing is set for 9 a.m. Monday, April 29. Download a schedule (PDF). 

Free parking at Civic Center

Visitors to downtown Del Mar can park for free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino Del Mar. The garage is accessible from entrances on 10th and 11th streets and by a stairway or elevator that connect to the plaza above.

Estimated timeline

• January through April: East side of Camino del Mar
• April through June: West side of Camino del Mar
• June: Camino del Mar medians and landscaping
• June: Camino del Mar paving, striping and signage.
