Trees aplenty in Streetscape plans

Before the Streetscape Project started, downtown Del Mar's inventory of street trees included 93 specimens. Some of them were diseased and an arborist recommended their removal. Others were left right in place.

This summer, when the $7.2 million project is finished, Camino del Mar between Plaza and 9^th Street will be lined with 143 trees. Colorful landscaping will be punctuated by St. Mary’s magnolias, Strawberry trees, Forest Pansy trees and Crepe Myrtles. Plans even call for a few of Del Mar’s signature Torrey pine trees. To preserve views, most of the treetops will be kept at about 25 feet tall.

Trees will be spaced at intervals of roughly 35 feet. Today, rectangular planting holes coated in mulch can be seen throughout the project area.

In June or July, when irrigation lines are activated, the trees will be delivered in 36- or 48-inch boxes and stand at least 12 feet tall, with canopies spreading about six feet in diameter.

Newly-planted landscapes must be treated with care. For that reason, planting and landscaping is scheduled for the end of the seven-month project.

Construction Activity: Week of April 29

During a concentrated, four-day effort, workers replaced sidewalks, curbs, gutters and planters at the busiest intersection in downtown Del Mar. Despite wet weather on Monday, demolition crews jack-hammered concrete and hauled away the rubble. By Wednesday, much of the newly-poured sidewalk was open for pedestrians, shoppers and diners. Workers also completed two of four brick paver crosswalks at the Camino del Mar and 15th Street intersection.

Construction activity: Week of May 6

• Construction of brick paver crosswalks and sidewalk ramps will continue at 15th Street.
• On the 1000 and 1100 blocks of east Camino del Mar, workers will begin cladding retaining walls with a flagstone veneer matching that of the monument sign at the Del Mar Civic Center.
• Installation of a storm drain crossing Camino del Mar at 11th Street will continue.
• Sidewalk construction and electrical trenching is scheduled for the 1200 block of west Camino del Mar.

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify Camino del Mar and improve safety between 9th and Plaza streets. The $7.2 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through July. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.

May 13: Biweekly briefing, public welcome

Residents and business owners are invited to meet the project team and get the latest information on construction activity during biweekly briefings at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar. The next briefing is set for 9 a.m. Monday, May 13. Download a schedule (PDF). 

Free parking at Civic Center

Visitors to downtown Del Mar can park for free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino Del Mar. The garage is accessible from entrances on 10th and 11th streets and by a stairway or elevator that connect to the plaza above.

Estimated timeline

• January through May: East side of Camino del Mar
• April through June: West side of Camino del Mar
• June: Camino del Mar medians and landscaping
• July: Camino del Mar paving, striping and signage.
