The Downtown Streetscape Project is making for a safer stroll along Camino del Mar.

This week, workers finished a retaining wall, sidewalk and ramps that replace blacktop-covered slope at 12^th Street.
The wall and ramps -- and others like them at 11th and 10th streets – meet accessibility requirements for disabled people. They also include planters for trees and shrubs.

On both sides of the highway, new sidewalks have replaced mismatched surfaces of concrete, brick, asphalt and, in places, dirt. 

New, brick paver crosswalks punctuate the project. Intersections at 13^th and 11^th streets are being expanded from 3- to 4-way crossings and a brand new crosswalk, with pedestrian-activated flashing lights, is coming to 10th Street.

The crosswalks arrive at landscaped “bulb-outs,” which narrow the distance that pedestrians must travel from one side of the road to the other.

A prettier, safer stroll is expected to pay great dividends to downtown businesses and make the village center and even great destination for visitors

Tuesday: "Rocky Road" ice cream social

Historic rains and other challenges have made for a rocky road to complete the Downtown Streetscape Project. We understand how disruptive construction can be, so what better way to thank people for their patience than to treat everyone to a scoop of delicious ice cream? 

Of course we've ordered rocky road -- and other flavors -- for an ice cream social (PDF) scheduled for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. July 16 at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino del Mar.

As the project reaches the home stretch, join us for a scoop as we show displays and answer your questions.

Week of July 15

Scheduled construction activity:

• East-west crosswalks at 11th Street;
• North-south crosswalk west of Camino del Mar at 11th Street;
• Curb and sidewalk construction, 1100 block of west Camino del Mar;
• Soils prep for landscaping; and
• Streetlight installations.
