Bring on the trees!

With concrete work mostly finished, construction crews on the Downtown Streetscape Project turned their attention this week to planting trees. Planting of the ornamental trees from 36- and 48-inch boxes began in the median of the 1400 block of Camino del Mar and will continue during the week ahead on the east- and west-side sidewalks. The landscaping program has crews working from north to south, block by block, first with trees and later with shrubs and other groundcover.

Plans call for Camino del Mar between Plaza and 9th Street to be lined with 143 trees, including St. Mary’s magnolias, Strawberry trees, Forest Pansy trees and Crepe Myrtles. Plans even call for a few of Del Mar’s signature Torrey pine trees.

Trees will be spaced at intervals of roughly 35 feet. To preserve views, most of the treetops will be kept at about 25 feet tall.

Week of August 19

15th Street, north to south, tree planting in medians and sidewalks;
Project-wide: energizing new streetlights, removing old ones, associated electrical work; and
SB Camino del Mar: All trenches crossing southbound lanes to receive permanent pavement.

Streetlights: Out with the old, on with the new

In coordination with SDG&E, new streetlights are being energized as old ones are removed. The electrical work – similar to that of the landscaping – is scheduled to continue next week on a north-to-south course, starting at 15^th Street.

Also this week, SDG&E completed the installation of two meter pedestals to control convenience power stations and irrigation controllers throughout the project.

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify Camino del Mar and improve safety between 9th and Plaza streets. The $7.2 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through August. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.

Monday: Final biweekly construction briefing

Residents and business owners have been invited to meet the project team and get the latest information on construction activity during biweekly briefings at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall, 1050 Camino del Mar. The final briefing is set for 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19.

Free parking at Civic Center

Visitors to downtown Del Mar can park for free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino Del Mar. The garage is accessible from entrances on 10th and 11th streets and by a stairway or elevator that connect to the plaza above.
