Automotive businesses can pose threats to storm water through contaminants like oil, grease, heavy metals, and chemicals that can be washed into storm drains and pollute waterways. To protect water quality and prevent pollution, automotive businesses must adopt comprehensive measures for spill prevention and response, proper fluid handling, and effective waste management. The following are examples of these measures.
- Develop and implement a spill prevention and response plan that includes procedures for handling and containing spills of automotive fluids, such as oil, coolant, and brake fluid. Provide spill kits and absorbent materials in strategic locations throughout the shop for quick response to spills.
- Properly store and handle automotive fluids to prevent leaks and spills. Use drip pans or trays to catch drips and leaks from vehicles during maintenance and repair activities. Regularly inspect and maintain fluid storage areas, including oil storage tanks and drums, to prevent leaks.
- Implement a waste management program to properly handle, store, and dispose of automotive waste materials, including used oils, filters, batteries, and tires. Recycle used oil and other fluids whenever possible and ensure that hazardous waste is disposed of.
