Camino del Mar over San Dieguito RIVER Bridge Replacement

before after rendering of CDM bridgeThe City of Del Mar is in the midst of planning a multi-year project to replace the Camino Del Mar bridge over the San Dieguito River.

As planned, the new bridge would accommodate one traffic lane in each direction, bike lanes with additional bike lane buffers, and sidewalks on both sides. With fewer pilings than the existing structure, the replacement bridge would improve the hydrology of the river in this environmentally sensitive area.

Located north of Sandy Lane and south of Via de la Valle, the existing bridge was built in 1932, widened in 1953, and modified in 2001. In 2010, a study identified corrosion and vulnerability to earthquakes and recommended replacement as the most cost-effective solution.

The project will be advertised for public bid in summer of 2026, with the 50-month construction period expected to begin in January 2027.

Del Mar has secured federal, state, and county grants to cover the majority of the estimated $80 million construction cost. Federal Highway Administration is providing 88.5% of total project costs through its Highway Bridge Program, and staff has secured an additional $5.5 million in local and state funding.
