How Sediment and Soil Harm Water Quality
Storm drains can become obstructed by sediment and, hence, pose risks of flooding and infrastructure damage. Once sediment is deposited, it not only creates murky water but also alters the landscape. Furthermore, it acts as a carrier for pollutants such as heavy metals and bacteria, posing threats to ecosystems and human well-being.
How You Can Help
- Contain and cover any exposed dirt piles to prevent tracking onto streets.
- Vegetate slopes and property edges that have exposed soil as plant roots to keep it in place.
- Sweep paved property areas to lessen sediment buildup and redistribute this sediment into yard areas as needed.
