Trash

How Trash Harms Water Quality

Trash is one of the most evident forms of pollution in waterways. Not only does it visually tarnish natural beauty, but it also disrupts aquatic environments as it degrades and releases toxins. Common forms of trash in storm drains include cigarette buds, food wrappers, bottles, and cans. This trash accumulates in the storm drain system and ends up on our beaches.

How You Can Help

  • Avoid littering, especially near waterways. Dispose of trash responsibly by using designated bins.
  • Secure trash lids, as winds and animals can carry trash away if not secured.
  • Ensure that trash in moving vehicles is secured and cannot blow away.
  • Any household hazardous waste should be properly disposed of. See this link for more information FAQs - Hazardous Waste Disposal
