Lawn Waste

How Lawn Waste Harms Water Quality

Lawn waste, including grass clippings, leaves, and yard debris, can accumulate on streets and sidewalks and be carried into nearby storm drains. Once there, it can clog infrastructure, resulting in potential flooding. Additionally, as it decomposes, it emits foul odors that attract pests and disease vectors. The decomposition process can deplete oxygen levels in the bodies of water, where it is ultimately discharged.

If you have hired a landscaping company to perform tasks on your property, please ensure that they are aware of and follow these guidelines.

How You Can Help

  • Do not sweep or blow leaves and landscape trimmings into the street. Collect all lawn waste and place it into the green waste bin for collection.
  • Clean up and dispose of any gardening chemicals, fertilizers, or soil spills. Don't leave chemicals outside or exposed to the elements.
