Pet Waste

How Pet Waste Harms Water Quality

Pet waste contains harmful pathogens and parasites such as E.coli and Giardia, that pose health risks to humans and animals alike. When pet waste is left on the ground and not properly disposed of, water can wash these contaminants into storm drains, creeks, and rivers, ultimately polluting water bodies. Additionally, the nutrients found in pet waste, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, act as fertilizers, leading to excessive algae growth in waterways. This algal overgrowth depletes oxygen levels in the water, causing harm to aquatic life and disrupting ecosystems.

How You Can Help

  • Be prepared to dispose of pet waste on walks by carrying a bag.
  • Always pick-up pet waste immediately, whether in your yard or during walks, and dispose of it properly in the trash or compost bins.
  • Stay up to date with pet vaccinations as they help prevent the spread of diseases.
