Permanent BMPs

Background

Treatment Control BMPs (Best Management Practices) are engineered systems, technology, and structural devices that use physical, chemical, or biological processes to treat, control, remove, or reduce pollutants from stormwater and urban runoff. They are normally permanent BMPs.

While temporary BMPs are typically implemented during construction activities and removed once the project is completed, permanent BMPs remain onsite after completion. Permanent BMPs are designed to provide long-term control of stormwater runoff and pollutant removal. See below for common forms of Permanent BMPs.

  • Bioretention basins
  • Vegetated swales and buffers
  • Permeable pavement
  • Underground stormwater chambers

The Del Mar Civic Center houses a variety of permanent BMPs to manage and treat stormwater runoff.

Outlet pipe allows stormwater runoff to discharge into bioretention basin.

Importance

Permanent BMPs address site-specific concerns of stormwater pollution. They can sequester pollutants such as sediment and trash, reduce erosion through dispersed flow, and allow for contribution to groundwater.

Del Mar Permanent BMPs

Permanent BMPs can replicate pre-existing conditions of land prior to development. Certain new development and re-development sites are classified as Priority Development Projects (PDPs) that require the installation of permanent BMPs.

Within the City of Del Mar, permanent BMPs are subject to annual maintenance verification to ensure continued functionality, per municipal code and state and local stormwater regulations. These annual maintenance verifications are sent to property owners and include instructions on how to submit verification.
